Parenting Road Code
Welcome to the Parenting Road Code course.
Wouldn’t it be great if we received a parenting manual when our children are born? We all start as Learner drivers, often left to figure out things for ourselves. This Parenting Road Code is designed to enhance the innate skills you already have as a parent. As a Defensive Driving Course is to an existing driver, this online training will give you a toolkit to support you to be the best and most confident parent you can be.
Who is this course for?
This course will be useful for people thinking about becoming parents, new parents, parents in the middle of lots to do, grandparents, early childhood teachers, social workers, in fact anyone who wants to support children to grow to be competent and wonderful human beings.
What can you expect from this course?
This course will help you think about what you want as a parent. It is a self-directed online course, to fit your busy schedule. You’ll be able to pick up lessons and pause them as needed.
There are eight modules to the tool kit.
- Firstly, you will explore the goals that you have for yourself, your children, and your parenting partner(s) if they are around. (Lesson 1 and 2).
- The course will then help you remember the strengths that you have as a parent and the values that you wish to maintain and teach your family. (Lesson 3)
- Next, we will share a child development framework and look at the developmental tasks that children face as they grow. (Lesson 4)
- As children grow, they will need some structure in the family, and we will help you to develop the rules that clarify what they are. (Lesson 5)
- The next part of the course will help you to think about your role as a parent and so we will explore a framework for thinking about your role as a parent and a tool for you to help you manage different parenting approaches to any given situation. (Lesson 6 and 7)
- In the last module of the course, you will have space to think about your goals and where you are now. (Lesson 8)
Each module or lesson will follow the same format: introduction, a story, the problem, a strategy or two, homework and some affirmations to support you. Affirmations are life-supporting messages that affirm needs and remind people that they are capable. You can write down the affirmations, sing them, say them to yourself, say them to your children, ask others to say them to you.
We will begin with a short self-assessment and end with a self-assessment to see what has changed.
